North Hills, CA

North Hills, a Los Angeles suburb, sits in the heart of the San Fernando Valley. The ethnically diverse community is located north of Van Nuys, south of Mission Hills, west of Panorama City, and east of Northridge.

Originally an agricultural community known as Mission Acres, North Hills was home to chicken and rabbit farms, vegetable gardens, walnut groves, and fruit trees on one acre plots created by early developers. Once the Pacific Electric Railway added a stop for streetcars to carry residents to and from downtown L.A., the area became more residential in nature and was renamed “Sepulveda” in 1927 to honor Francisco Sepulveda, a former mayor of L.A.

In 1991, the community made the decision to adopt the name of North Hills in an effort to distance itself from the drug, gang, and crime activity that was occurring along the Sepulveda corridor throughout the 1980’s.

The daily commute

North Hills is home to some interesting sights. The Sepulveda Unitarian Universalist Society building is known as “The Onion” for its unique dome shape. The 15 foot topiary canine -”The Ivy Poodle” – created by resident, Brian Welch, is a local favorite. The Howard Greer House, created by famed architect and designer, Frank Lloyd Wright, is also located in North Hills.

Due to its proximity to the 405-San Diego Freeway and the 101, North Hills is a good location for drivers making the daily commute to and from downtown Los Angeles and the surrounding communities. In addition, its proximity to Cal State Northridge and the Northridge Metrolink station also make it a desirable community for students.

However, the 101/405 interchange handles about a half a million vehicles per day, resulting in highways that are congested and made dangerous due to poor road conditions, distracted motorists, truck traffic, and by the sheer volume of vehicles that travel them on a daily basis. The risk of accidents occurring is higher due to these hazardous conditions.
